No Mas Cerveza (No More Beer)
City Commissioners in Rome have agreed to revoke the beer-pouring license for a controversial nightclub on John Davenport Drive.
The Caliente club will be no more in the wake of the city’s decision. Alcohol Control Commission Chairman Kim Canada says most of the problems stemmed from incidents that started inside the club.
The owner of the club Roger Powell is a former longtime Rome City Policeman.
The most serious incident occurred on August 12, when two people were shot in the parking lot.
*June 10th, Officers responded to the club on a call of shots fired. When officers arrived on the scene they described what was occurring as chaos. Several victims had been assaulted and two individuals were taken to Floyd Medical for gun shot wounds.
*August 4th, Officers found several people smoking marijuana both inside and outside of the club. Officers made 3 arrests involving drugs.
*August 5th, Officers found a 99 Mitsubishi Gallant in the parking lot of the club that had just been involved in a traffic accident and fled the scene.
*August 12th, (This incident occurred in the AM hours of Saturday, basically Late Friday night) There was a shooting outside of the club that had spilled over from an altercation that took place inside. Two individuals were shot and several arrests were made for possession of controlled substances. According to the officers, there were also arrests made for aggravated assault.
*August 12th, (This incident occurred in the PM hours of Saturday, or early Saturday night). Officers discovered a person under the age of 21 consuming alcohol at the club.
Previously at the ACC meeting, Rome Mayor Ronnie Wallace said he is “confident this is not an isolated incident” based on what he heard during the ACC meeting. He went on to say the club has “Proven that security staff are unable to handle activities at the club”.
Powell was not at the Tuesday’s Commission meeting. The Rome News-Tribune is reporting that he does not plan to operate the business any longer in any capacity.
