Commission Approves New Deputies, Adopts New Dog Ordinance.

Sheriff Tim Burkhalter will be getting his wish, actually half of his wish.

The County Commission has approved the Hiring of 5 additional deputies at the Sheriffs Department as well as an additional NCIC clerk. Sheriff Burkhalter had asked for 12 deputies and the NCIC clerk.

The Commission however did not quash the hopes for the other deputies completely; they will look at the request again in January.

The Sheriff had also requested approval to purchase 3 new Dodge Charger Pursuit vehicles for the department. The Commission gave the ok for the purchase of new vehicles, just not the Dodge Chargers. They will look into buying Ford Crown Vics and could possibly buy 4 of those vehicles for the price of 3 Chargers.

In other County business:

The Commission approved and adopted a new dog ordinance to assist in protecting the community against dangerous and potentially dangerous dogs.

There were several citizens in attendance who were concerned with the ordinance pertaining to Staffordshire terriers. According to Silver Creek resident Rodney Dillard, he had gotten some bad information from Reading the Rome News-Tribune (Click here to see the story Dillard is reffering to). Apparently they had reported on August 29th that a new provision would “automatically classify as “vicious” any pit bull or pit bull mix”.

The new ordinance only classified dangerous or potentially dangerous dogs. Nothing in the ordinance pertained to particular breed.

There is however an ordinance that dates back at least 20 years that requires Staffordshire Terriers be muzzled when outside unless in an approved fenced area. Approved fenced areas require 6ft fencing and 1 foot concreted in the ground.

The Commission also discussed the new version of the long talked about parking deck that would sit next to the proposed town green. The commission agreed to, well, continue talking about it.

The Commission also awarded the contract for construction of the playground facilities at North Floyd Park and Midway Park to Hazley Recreation.
