Chase Reaches Speeds of 110mph, Leads Floyd County Police Into Cedartown
An attempted traffic stop on Hwy 27 near Floyd College and Booze Mountain Road just before midnight Monday led Floyd County police on a high speed chase that would eventually end up in Cedartown.
A Floyd County officer spotted a silver Dodge Intrepid speeding Southbound on Hwy 27 and attempted to pull the vehicle over when it accelerated and attempted to elude the officer.
According to Scanner traffic, Floyd County 911 and Floyd County police officers, the Intrepid with the yet to be identified occupants reached speeds as high as 110mph on US 27 before it entered Polk County and then Cedartown.
The Floyd County officer was joined by Polk County and Cedartown police when the chase reached Polk County. The intrepid led officers down several side streets before the driver abandoned the car across from the Cedar Creek Animal Hospital in Cedartown.
The unidentified passenger who appears to be the driver’s wife was left in the car and arrested by Officers.
There were some tense moments when a shots fired call was made by the Floyd County officer. That radio traffic was followed by almost 20 minutes of no radio contact before 911 officials were finally able to make contact with the officer who had been on foot and out of portable radio range. It is still unclear if the suspect fired the shots that officers heard or if it came from neighbors in the area.
Polk County police brought in a police dog and officers surrounded the area in an attempt to locate the driver but those attempts were unsuccessful.
The passenger will be charged with various crimes but it is not clear yet what those may be.
A Floyd County patrol car that was not involved in the actual chase was a casualty of the incident as well. Apparently on the way to the scene, its transmission gave out and it had to be towed back to Floyd County.
We will have more on this incident as information becomes available.
