GA Power Officials Stumped As To Why Live Power Line Fell Into Traffic.

Georgia Power officials are scratching their heads as to why a live power line fell and dangled amid traffic on Turner McCall Boulevard near Cooper Drive and McDonalds around 7pm Wednesday evening.

“There was an explosion and a huge fireball right before it fell” says Roman Beth Hunter who was sitting in the parking lot of the Captain D’s restaurant just down from the fallen line.

Hunter says the line fell into traffic and just “dangled there sparking”. According to police and fire officials, it does not appear that any vehicles struck the hanging line.

The fallen line knocked power out to a large portion of Turner McCall from 8th street to five points. The power was out for about an hour before Georgia Power workers were able to restore service. The outage affected several restaurants along the route including Burger King whose managers said; they were without power for over and hour and had to close for nearly two hours to allow time for cooking equipment to heat back up once power was restored.

Officials with 911 were inundated with calls about the dark traffic lights backing up 911 lines and making it difficult for actual emergencies to get through. A call for assistance went out to local radio stations to inform motorists that officials were aware of the problem and were responding to the situation.

The situation was repaired by 8pm on Turner McCall Blvd. but several homes in the area were still without service as of 9pm.

Police remind motorists that if you come to a traffic light that is not working, you must treat it as if it were a 4 way stop.
