Wildfires Burn Across Floyd County, 60 Acres Consumed In Canton.
With wildfires burning in several locations across Floyd County on Monday, an even bigger woods fire consumed nearly 60 acres in Canton Monday afternoon before firefighters got it contained.
The fire, in an undeveloped portion of the Laurel Canyon community did not threaten any structures, but at its height, had flames shooting eight-to-12 feet above the treetops.
Firefighters were somewhat short-handed, as local fire departments have lent crew members to downstate firefighting agencies battling the wildfires in southeast Georgia.
Ray Flood is the acting district ranger for the Rome area. With all the resources shifted to south Georgia, he and many others are forced into other roles.
“My normal job is as supervisor for the whole county,” Flood said. “But since I’ve got personnel in south Georgia, I’m back on the ‘dozer, and assisting the whole district.”
While Monday’s fire never threatened any homes, it is the eighth fire in two days that Flood has had to scramble to fight.
Smoke from the fire in south Georgia has blackened more than 87 square miles and forced the closing of schools in Ware County.
