Old Spears Building Coming Down, Sold For Bricks And Pine.
Environmental issues have prevented potential developers from doing anything with the old Spears Mattress building on E. 12th Street. So when a North Carolina firm offered owner Wilson Burgess $135,000 for the old brick and heart of pine beams, he said – Sold !.
Demolition of the old building is underway and Burgess says the Gastonia company will clean up the site before they leave. Burgess says he has no specific plans for the parcel once demolition is complete, but adds it may be eligible for grant money to help with the clean up of environmental concerns, which are said by city of Rome personnel to include arsenic.
