Early Morning Fire Displaces North Rome Family.
An early morning fire on Church Street Friday morning sent residents of some public housing units on Church Street in North Rome scrambling to get out of their apartments.
Just before 5:30am, fire fighters responded to the call at 103C Church Street. Fire personnel were able to quickly put out the fire but not before it severely damaged one unit and smoke damaged another.
Rome Fire Marshall Scott Silvey says the units smoke detector likely saved the lives of the apartment’s residents. Silvey added, the fire started in the living room of the unit but it is not yet known what actually started the blaze.
Representatives from the American Red Cross were called in to assist the displaced family that included 4 children.
