Farmers To Receive Assistance For Drought Losses.
For most of us, this year’s record drought has meant brown dry lawns; however for local farmers, the dry weather has meant huge losses in revenue.
Todd Hice with the USDA office in Rome says help is on the way. Local farmers will soon be able to apply for assistance in dealing with losses incurred from the 2007 drought. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared most of Georgia, including Floyd County as a drought disaster area, making farms and related businesses eligible for assistance including low-interest loans.
The USDA says that to receive a disaster designation, a county must have incurred a loss of 30 percent or more in dollar value for all crops.
The Farm Service Agency takes into account the extent of losses, available security for the loan and ability to repay the money.
