Berry Prepares For Mountain Day
Alumni of all ages will join students, parents and other friends of Berry College this weekend for the annual celebration of founder Martha Berry’s birthday known as Mountain Day. Festivities get under way Friday afternoon and continue through Sunday. The event is expected to draw between 2,500 and 3,000 visitors to the Berry campus.
Highlights Friday include an afternoon golf scramble at Coosa Country Club and the annual Mountain Day Olympics for students, faculty and staff, which will be held on the main campus beginning at 3 p.m. on the Moon Building lawn. Saturday’s schedule kicks off at 8 a.m. with the 5Krun/2-mile health walk and continues into the afternoon with a picnic lunch on the mountain campus and, at 1 p.m., the “Grand March” of students – one of Berry’s most enduring traditions. If you are planning to visit the mountain campus on Saturday, expect heavy traffic from mid-morning until mid-afternoon.
Other high points include Saturday’s 10 a.m. chapel service featuring 1985 alumna Terri Colson Earls as guest speaker in the Berry College Chapel and a 30th anniversary celebration of Berry College Elementary and Middle School from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Hamrick Hall.
The schedule is also replete with reunions, tours, intercollegiate soccer and volleyball games, performances of the musical comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by the Berry College Theatre Company, a Berry alumni invitational art exhibit, a campuswide talent show and Saturday’s all-night, on-campus student festival, Marthapalooza.
