Early Morning Vehicle Fire Ignites/Destroys East Floyd Home

By RomeNewswire • on October 15, 2007

An early morning fire has completely destroyed a home on Sands Springs Road just past Fouche Gap Road in Eastern Floyd County early Monday morning. Officials tell RomeNewswire that the home was still smoldering as of 9:30am.

The call initially came into Rome/Floyd 911 just before 4am that a vehicle was on fire about 10 feet from the house. By the time firefighters reached the home, the fire had already spread and was heavily involved in the structure.

To make matters worse, in that remote area of the county, fire hydrants are few and far between. Several additional trucks had to be called to the scene to ferry water back and forth from a location several miles away in Big Texas Valley.

According to officials, the fire was burning so intense that it ignited the wooded area around the home but firefighters were able to douse that fire before it spread. The brush fire truck was called to the scene in case any additional fire spread into the woods.

After about 30 minutes and several tanks of water, the home was still 100% involved and firefighters began defensive operations trying to keep the fire from spreading.

Two occupants and two pets were in the home at the time of the fire but escaped unharmed. We are awaiting updates and will have additional information as it becomes available.
