MRSA Confirmed At Coosa High School

In a story you saw first here on RomeNewswire.com, Two cases of MRSA have now been confirmed at Coosa High School.

Coosa principle Sam Sprewell said the school was made aware of the two cases on Monday. He said they have completely cleansed the school with the appropriate chemicals. School officials have also sent information home to parents and all of the students have been shown a video about MRSA staph and how to best prevent it.

Sprewell said the two students were football players.

MRSA, or methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, is a strain of staph infection that is resistant to some commonly used antibiotics. It can be treated with other antibiotics; however without treatment, the bacteria can be deadly.

MRSA physically resembles a regular staph infection, which typically emerges as a pimple or boil that can be red, swollen and painful and generally contains pus or drainage.

According to Floyd County Schools spokesman Tim Hensley, state guidelines allow students to return to school as long as they are being treated and sores are bandaged.

Hensley added that parents need to be aware of sores that come up on students. He also said practicing good hygiene is one of the most important factors in preventing the infection.

We will have more as it becomes available.
