MLK Day Festivities In Full Swing

The Freedom March made its way up broad street today, ending with a program at the City Auditorium.
Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond was the featured speaker.
Also today, Habitat for Humanity celebrated the dream of Dr. King by joining hands across the historical divides of race, religion, and economic status to build a home in partnership with a local deserving family. A groundbreaking ceremony for the Habitat for Humanity “Building a Dream House” occurred Monday at 98 Earl Street in North Rome. Officials said this home will be a tangible witness of the cooperative spirit of all persons of goodwill in Rome and Floyd County.
In other MLK day festivities, Georgia Supreme Court Justice Robert Benham was the guest speaker at Shorter College’s King Day Celebration. Justice Benham, a native of Cartersville, served as Chief Justice from 1995 until 2001.
