Local Police Explorers Earn High Honors at Competition

After a six year hiatus from regional competitions, Rome’s own Law Enforcement Explorer Post #2072 earned high honors this pass weekend at the regional Winterfest competition in Gatlinburg, TN.
The post had been planning and training for the past year on various subjects such as traffic accident investigation, DUI Sobriety Tests, crime scene processing, and numerous other subjects. To complicate matters, the post was given around twelve random subjects that would be narrowed down to four in a lottery nly when they arrived Friday Night. 175 other Explorer Posts from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, and Kentucky competed in the various subjects.
Explorers competed on Satruday afternoon in the competitions on Accident Investigation, Building Search Warrant, and a Uniform and Drill Competition. It wasn’t until Sunday Morning that they knew the outcome to thier preparation and hardwork. The post scored 1st place in Accident Investigation, 3rd place in Uniform and Drill, and were in the top ten for building search.
In an interview, Chief Explorer Devin Womack said he was very pleased in how the post competed. He also complemented how some of the newer members “stepped up to the plate” with the experience they’ve gotten so far.
Law Enforcement Explorers is a program sponsored by various Law Enforcement intities and the Boy Scouts of America. It is for young people ages 14-21 who are interested in a possible law enforcement career. Explorers for the Rome Police Dept. Post #2072 participate in various activites such as training with the police in areas such as firearms, arrest techniques, etc. and work at events such as parades and concerts. Meetings are held every other Tuesday beginning Feburary 5th at the Rome Police Dept. Training Center at 2626 Callier Springs Rd.
