While Thursday was a near perfect day with mild temperatures and sunny, clear weather, the breezy conditions and low humidities left brush fires, both controlled and accidental, burning around Floyd County.

It was apparent Wednesday Afternoon in the Lindale and Southeastern Floyd County Area that people were taking advantage of the great warm weather to begin burning brush for the Spring as a light haze with a scent of wood burning encompassed the area. Also, Georgia Forestry took advantage of the weather to burn controlled fires including one on GA State Route 100 (Fosters Bend Rd.) in Coosa and in the Berry Wildlife Managemant Area off of CCC Rd.

Around 3:30 Thursday Afternoon, firefighters began responding to non-controlled brush fires that sprang up on opposite sides of the county. The first being at 451 Bells Ferry Rd. According to Fire Radio Traffic, the call prompted several engine companies to respond when complaintants told Floyd 911 that it was nearing a structure. The fire was quickly brought under control after burning around an acre, slightly damaging a cabin, and injuring two people. While the residents refused to comment, Rome Fire units advised that the patients had minor-first degree burns but refused further treatment.

A short time later, a Rome Fire unit responded to an additonal fire on Fosters Bend Rd. located on Inland Container’s Hunting Club. According to radio traffic, the fire was about 4 acres and Rome Fire Dept. requested Georgia Forestry’s Assistance, which were dispatched from surrounding counties due to Floyd Forestry units operating at thier controlled burns.
