Tornado Victim Improving At Redmond

Mike Turner is a man who has beat great odds and made great strides in only a matter of a month’s time. Mike is the Aragon native who was the victim of the tornado that swept through Georgia on March 15. In this tragic event, Mike lost his home, his wife and most all of his belongings. However, through all of this, Mike and his daughters have been counting their blessings since this day.
Mike is now a patient in Inpatient Rehab at Redmond Regional Medical Center. He is recovering from several breaks in his lower body and has made enormous amounts of progress since his initial injuries. Mike is thinking and speaking well, interacting with his therapists and family and looks forward to walking again. Mike says, “The staff at Redmond have done a fabulous job of getting my spirits up. They have given me great amounts of support.”
In addition to the support he has gained from his healthcare workers, he also spoke about the great amount of love and support the community has given him. As people heard about the news of his home being struck by the tornado, items began coming in the mail. People began finding papers, awards and pictures scattered by the tornado that belonged to the Turners. Shelly Markiewicz, Mike’s daughter, says they receive packages and letters daily with items people have found that they took the time to return to them. Items have come from as far as Dahlonega, Cornelia and Euharlee. Mike says he is deeply touched by the kindness the community has poured out on him.
Mike says he promised his therapists at Redmond that he would one day walk on his own back into the unit to say thank you for all their work. With the excellent progress he has made so far, it looks like he will meet this goal in the near future.
