Floyd County Wellness Program Receives ACCG Incentive Grant

Rome, Ga. - Floyd County and its Working on Wellness program (WOW) have been selected by the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) to receive one of 42 Employee Wellness Program Incentive Grants awarded statewide to promote worksite programs designed to enhance the health of county employees and family members.

“We are very pleased that the WOW program was again chosen to receive this grant,” said Kevin Poe, County Manager. “This will enable us to continue to offer new health programs to our employees and their families. Based on several statistics, we know that our employees are taking their health seriously and thanks to this grant, we can continue to offer more programs that improve the quality of life for participants.”

Awards are made to members of the ACCG-Group Health Benefits Program, underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, based on a County’s commitment to employee health and demonstrated collaboration with other community groups and organizations engaged in health promotion.

“Our Wellness program has been in service now for 4 years and we have had tremendous results,” said Larry Johnson, Floyd County Human Resources Director. “Currently, we have over 20 programs for employees to participate in, including reduced-cost Weight Watchers meetings, WOW Wednesday, American Heart Association’s START Walking program, an annual Health Fair –all of which employees can participate on company time. Most importantly, we have hired a part time on-site nurse to visit departments weekly to, among other things, conduct blood pressure checks – that has made a huge difference in several of our employees’ lives.”

Recent programs added to the Wellness Committee are Yoga, Body Toning and a Battle of the Bulge competition with the City of Rome was just completed as well.

Wellness programs have a demonstrated track record of improving employee health and quality of life while reducing medical claims and improving workplace morale.
