By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings
A late Saturday afternoon structure fire created heavy smoke and flames in North Rome Saturday Afternoon.
Rome Fire Units Engine 1, Engine 4, Rescue 1, Ladder 1, and Car 23 responded to the area of Calhoun Ave. and Stonewall St. around 4:00 PM. Both engine companies arrived at the same time to find the entire house obscured by the smoke and flames visible from the rear of the home at 503 Calhoun Ave. Fire Units were able to knock the fire down within 10 minutes.
According to Deputy Chief Benny Bohannon, the fire started in te bedroom, and he speculates that a cigarette was to blame. No one was at home at the time of the fire. Representatives from the Rome Fire Marshals Office and a Rome Police Detective were called to investigate the fire.
