Trion Woman Cries Foul Over Questionable Spud

A trip to the Wendy’s in Trion, Georgia turned into an experience one Trion woman will never forget.
Misty Copeland told RNW that she sat down to eat with her husband after ordering a baked potato and was horrified to find what she says was about 15 baked roaches on the potato. Copeland said, “As you might imagine my first reaction was I can’t believe this followed next by the nausea in my stomach.”
Copeland said she went back to the restaurant with the potato and employees apologized for the incident and said “They have been coming in on the truck that way.” Copeland said she was only offered a refund on the 99cent potato for her trouble.
The most recent health inspection of the restaurant shows a score of 92, However, Copeland said she believes they need to check a little closer next time.
Officials with the restaurant say not so fast, the things on the potato were not roaches according to store General manager Becky Bean. Bean says, “They were potato sprouts.” She told RomeNewswire, “There are no bugs in my store.”
When told of the store’s explanation, Copeland said, “Sprouts don’t have antennas and legs.”
Shaun Brand, Enviromental Health Inspector with Chattooga County said he inspected the restaurant on Wednesday and did not see any evidence of roaches. However, Brand said he always reccommends to people with complaints that they call the next day.Brand said he did not receive this complaint until Wednesday.
Pickens Lindsay who owns the Trion Wendy’s, along with about 13 more stores acorss the area said the potatoes come in completely wrapped in foil, prewashed from the distributor. “We take food safety very seriously” Lindsay said.
Lindsay invited RNW to the store for an up close inspection of the potatoes and their facility.
Officials with the Health Department said they found no significant violations at the Wendy’s and there were no signs of roaches. Brand said he looked at the picture in question and admitted that it was kind of blurry and that a determination could not be made from the photograph.
Copeland said, “I know what I saw and my husband saw it too. There were bugs on that potato.”
