A heavy plume of smoke rising from Booze Mountain led Firefighters to discover a large brush pile along with a Jeep Grand Cherokee on fire Monday afternoon.
Concerned citizens began calling 911 from the Conns Lake area at the foot of Booze Mountain around 1:40 PM reporting the column of smoke rising from the behind Pepperell Middle and Elementary Schools. Firefighters with Engine 2, Quint 3, and Car 25 intially responded to the area of the schools.
According to RNW Editor Jerry Duke, the plume was visible from several miles away.
As Engine 2 crossed Booze Mountain Rd., they were flagged down by a citizen near Otting and Sons Junkyard who was pointing into the woods. They soon discovered the large brush pile and Jeep burning and summoned additonal assistance from Engine 10 and Floyd EMA’s Brush Truck 1.
Fire Units stayed on the scene attempting to extinguish the blaze and prevent the fire from spreading until Georgia Forestry arrived. They also requested Floyd County Police to respond to investigate a vehicle there at the fire scene that had been destroyed.
Neighbors tell RomeNewswire that the property is owned by the Georgia Department of Transportation as part of the New Bypass project.
