A reportedly vacant structure was a near total loss after it caught fire late Thursday afternoon.
Rome Fire Engines 9, 4, and 5 along with Car 25 were dispatched to the fire on Fire Tower Rd. off East Hermitage Rd. around 3:10 PM. The fire created a large plume of smoke that was visible by Engine 9 around halfway throught their response time. As Engine 9 arrived, they discovered that a large portion of the structure had already burned to the ground.

There was some initial concern about a nearby propane tank that was overheating but firefighters were able to cool it after it vented and reseated.
