Major Gas Line Break Prompts Small Evacuation

A few homes were evacuated and a road shut down in North Rome after AT&T crews hit a major gas line Monday Morning.

The highly pressurized distribution line operated by Summerville gas was ruptured after an AT&T truck ran over it on Bells Ferry Rd. in front of the Shriners Club around 10:30 AM. The gas leak prompted fire Engine 4 to evacuate 2 nearby residences and the County Police to shut the dead-end road down.

A dispute over who maintained the line caused no delay and Summerville Gas had the leaked stopped within 25 minutes of the call being dispatched.

According to officials with Summerville gas, apparently the AT&T workers hit a tap in the 250lb line, causing the leak.
