Transformer, Power Circuits Cause Problems Downtown

By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings

Georgia Power along with local authorities were left baffled after a power problem caused massive issues in two downtown blocks.

The first indication of power problems was reported around 2:30 PM by Floyd E-911 after they lost power at the 911 center and had to switch to back-up generator power. Shortly after this, reports came in of the traffic lights in front of the Old Courthouse being out and reports of smoke in the building at Wachovia Bank.

According to Rome Fire Deputy Chief Benny Bohannon, firefighters responded in force to Wachovia and discovered the smoke was spreading downward through the floors via the air conditioning. While Bohannon was unsure if the surge caused the problem, it was found that a motor on one of the AC Units had burned out causing the smoke.

Firefighters then moved to the Law Enforcement Center behind the bank to reports of smoke in the building. While there were reports of welding being done on an evidence room “cage”, Bohannon speculated that the surge caused the smoke there also.

According to PFC Jon Sisson of the Rome Police Dept., Georgia Power was working in the area when a transformer malfunctioned, causing the surge. Georgia Power was also investigating the cause.

Traffic was affected for about 30 minutes on Broad St. as multiple Fire Engines blocked one lane and was also affected by drivers on W. 5th Ave. as they were confused by the traffic lights flashing yellow.
