Overturned Truck Was Hauling PCB’s From GE’s Rome Site

At approximately 5:00 est on Monday afternoon emergency crews responded to reports of an overturned 18 wheeler on Highway 9, just north of the Country Store in Cedar Bluff.

The truck was hauling a load of contaminated topsoil, containing PCB’s. The topsoil was from the GE plant in Rome and the 18 wheeler was en route to a landfill in west Alabama to dispose of the material.

Firefighters had to be outfitted with Hazardous Material Suits as a precautionary measure until a Haz-Mat Crew from Hanceville could arrive to clean up the spill.

Highway 9 had to be shut down for a period of approximately 10 hours during the clean up operation, finally re-opening shortly after 2:00 Tuesday morning.

Though shaken up, the truck driver was uninjured.

The cause of that accident remains under investigation.

Responding to the scene were the Cedar Bluff and Gaylesville Fire Departments, the Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Cherokee EMS, and Cedar Bluff Police along with units from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.
