New Public Safety Pay Plan To Go Before County Commission
Floyd County public safety departments have been hemorrhaging employees to other departments over the last several years due to higher pay elsewhere. However, a special committee comprised of public safety workers and County commissioners has a plan that will hopefully be a first step in addressing those issues.
Under the new plan that will now go before the full County Commission, public safety will begin see raises in October of this year.
The new plan will address issues of salary compaction and pay scale inequities according Sgt. John Blalock with the Floyd County Police department. Currently there are situations where new employees are earning nearly as much as their supervisors. Under the proposed plan, ranked employees salaries will be raised to be more comparable with what their counterparts in surrounding departments are earning.
The plan also includes service factor adjustments that will go into effect in October and give percentage raises based on your years of service. Employees with 2-5 years service will receive a 1% increase. Those with 6-10 years service will receive a 2% increase and those with 10+ years will get a 3% increase.
The plan also addresses the starting salary of new hires as well. The new minimum salary will be raised to $30,632 and anyone making less than that salary will be raised to that level within 15 months.
According to Blalock, “no pay plan prior to this one addressed all of the issues.” “This is not the final step” he added, “this is just the first step”.
