Wreck Starts Large Brush Fire in Shannon; Driver Missing

By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings

Rome firefighters were on the scene of a large woods fire searching for the driver that caused it Monday evening.

The fire started around 8:00 PM when a car struck a power pole going down Tipperary Dr. near Shannon.  The wreck downed power lines which started the fire that required 3 engine companies and County Police Units.

Firefighters found the vehicle abandoned upon their arrival which led them to search of the fire scene, fearing that the driver may have been ejected due to a heavy impact.

Georgia Power and Georgia Forestry were asked to respond ASAP so that their services might aide in the search. County Police also responded when spectators began to drive over the mountain.

Police units shut down access down the mountain via Tipperary Dr. while firefighters worked to contain the spreading blaze.

The search was concluded around 9:30 with no signs of the driver being located.
