Sunday Storms Bring Intense Lightning, Heavy Rains, and Winds

By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings
When a heavy thunderstorm spontaneously formed near Coosa around 8:00 AM Sunday Morning, Romans had no idea a heavier storm of the same nature would move through Rome again around 2:00 PM, this time severe.
The storm that formed near Ft. Payne and grew considerably near Coosa left emergency crews scrambling in its wake. Most problems occurred in the western quadrant of the county, including a trees across the roads and power lines on Huffaker Rd. near Big Texas Valley Rd., Melrose Ave., and Highcliff Rd. Lightning also struck a home on Norcross Way, though it caused minimal damge.
As the storm moved East, it caused mainly flooding on the roads. The storm did down trees in South Rome on Branham Ave. near Myrtle Hill (As seen at top) and at the nearby Coosa Country Club where a limb fell on a car, trapping it’s uninjured driver for a few minutes. A tree also still blocked E. 1st Ave. near the Salvation Army (As seen below) as of 3:30 PM. Lightning was also to blame after striking a tree at 622 Pennington Ave.
Georgia Power Crews along with Public Works and Floyd Co. EMA were still out working out problems at 4:00 PM, though most had been resolved.
