Voters Head To Polls Tuesday, Turnout Expected To Be Less Than 50%

Tuesday will be the day local voters who choose to vote on a Democratic ballot will select the winner of the Floyd County Superior Court Clerk race.

Democrats John Harkins and Barbara Penson are vying for the position.

Harkins currently serves as Chief investigator for the Floyd County District Attorneys office, while Penson is an administrative assistant to a Deputy Superintendent of the Floyd County School system.

Of note, former Floyd County superintendent Kelly Henson has announced his support for Harkins in the race.

The winner Tuesday will be the next Superior Court Clerk as there is no Republican opposition in the General election.

Voters on the Democratic ballot will also choose between 5 candidates who want to take on Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss in the US Senate race. That race could possibly not see a clear winner and could result in a runoff which would be held on August 5th.

Both parties will vote In the Public Service Commission race to nominate candidates to square off in the general election.

Elections officials are calling for a less than 50% turnout. Sources say the vast majority of that turnout could be on the Democratic ballot since many republicans are expected to vote on the Democratic ballot since it has the only race of local interest, the Superior Court Clerk race.
