In what should have been a fairly quick election night due to the light turnout and only one race of local importance, The Floyd County elections office once again kept those waiting for results on the edge of their seats until late in the evening.

In the only local race, Democrats John Harkins and Barbara Penson went head to head for the Superior Court Clerks seat. After a long primary battle, Penson ended election night with a nearly 400 vote lead to win the post. There was no Republican opposition.

Penson told her supporters after the results were announced that she will “treat the citizens of this county with the utmost respect” and that she was “honored to be trusted with this position.”

Penson will take office in January.

Turnout for the primary was estimated at around 10%.
