Rome’s Levy System Must Be ReCertified

Before new FEMA flood maps can be printed the Corps of Engineers will have to re-certify Rome’s downtown levees.

Rome Public Services Director Kirk Milam says having the Corps undertake the project will save the city a large amount of money. The re-certification needs to be completed by Sept. 1st.

The city’s water and sewer committee was briefed on a proposed Etowah Water Bank Tuesday. Finished water would be sold to the Bank and then stored in underground aquifers for re-sale, largely to the Metro Atlanta area in times of drought.

Water and Sewer committee chairman Buzz Wachsteter says it still smells like an interbasin transfer of water, which the city has staunchly opposed
