VW To Build Billion Dollar Plant In Chattanooga
Volkswagen announced late Tuesday morning that it will build its new vehicle manufacturing plant along I-75 12 miles northeast of Chattanooga.
The NW Georgia area is expected to benefit with employment at the plant, along with the location of satellite plants that will supply VW. The plant is projected to open sometime in 2010 and create 2,000 jobs. Its initial production capacity will be 150,000 vehicles, including a new midsize sedan designed specifically to compete with the Toyota Camry.
A site in northeast Alabama was the other finalist, but Tennessee’s incentive package apparently beat out Alabama’s offer.
Rome currently has several plants that supply parts to automotive assembly plants in Alabama.
