Builders Hardware Site Could Be Home To New Publix
It may take up to two years but the area could see another new 14+ acre commercial development on Shorter Avenue. Developers have eyes on the current Mathis Builders Hardware location and also several acres of adjacent property currently occupied by Ready Mix USA and formerly owned by Design Concrete.
The property is across the street from Darlington lower school and the American legion.
Early indications are that developers are in negotiations with grocery store chain Publix but RomeNewswire has not been able to confirm the specifics. Publix officials would not comment on negotiations but say at this point there is no signed lease.
We have confirmed that current Builders Hardware owner and local businessman Mike Mathis has a contract on the Ready Mix USA property. Mathis says he is also in negotiations with the railroad to obtain a small portion of property owned by them that runs between the two properties.
Mathis says he has also been in negotiations with a developer but that a deal has not been completed. He said he is not privy to any negotiations with specific tenants but did say any deal could take up to two years to complete.
Apparently any deal would not mean the end for Builders Hardware, Mathis said he is in the process of identifying a new location for that business.
In all, the proposed property on Shorter Avenue would encompass a little over 14 acres.
