Prior Named Symphony’s New Director
The South’s oldest symphony has a new leader. Richard Prior, a native of England has been selected to become the new conductor and music director for the symphony and his first show directing the Rome Symphony will be October 4th.
Prior is presently the director of orchestral studies at Emory University in Atlanta.
Joel Todino, chairman of the selection committee said that Prior’s experience and his personality stood out among the field of some two dozen applicants. Prior is not a stranger to the Rome orchestra, having served as guest conductor during a show last October.
John Carruth led the orchestra for 20 years, retiring in 1995. Since then, the musicians have been led by Tristan Foison who served into the fall of 1998. Phillip Rice was conductor from 2000 through the 2007 season.
