2 Waves Of Storms Blow Through Rome

By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings

Rome was battered by heavy rains and winds as storms passed through the area Tuesday Evening.

The initial line of storms came through bringing mainly heavy rains to Northern Floyd County around 4:00 PM.

As that line passed, the sun came out over Rome while a line of storms formed over the line in Cherokee County, AL.

This line first showed its ugly face when the skies darkened and winds picked up around 4:45 PM as they approached from the Summerville area. The gusting winds that proceeded these storms were enough to begin snapping trees.

Heavy Rain and intense lightning followed the winds and sent emergency crews buzzing to calls around the county. These calls included numerous wrecks and alarms, along with houses struck by lightning on Vinings Ct. in East Rome and Garden Lakes Blvd. in West Rome. According to witnesses on Vinings Ct., they heard a very loud bang as the lightning hit a home in the 100 block, tearing the roof off of the patio and throwing the homes electrical breakers.

Winds also toppled trees in East Rome, North Rome, and towards Kingston. These brought power outages and knocked many traffic lights out around town.

Floyd EMA was activated due to the delay in response of Georgia Power Crews as they raced to restore power. EMA crews were able to relieve the many Fire Engines standing by with downed power lines.

All but rain and a few rumbles of Thunder had ended by 7:30 PM.
