Nearly 170 people attended the meeting where commissioners voted unanimously to support the measure.

The new plan will address issues of salary compaction and pay scale inequities according Sgt. John Blalock with the Floyd County Police department. Currently there are situations where new employees are earning nearly as much as their supervisors. Under the now approved plan, ranked employees salaries will be raised to be more comparable with what their counterparts in surrounding departments are earning.

The plan also includes service factor adjustments that will go into effect in October and give percentage raises based on your years of service. Employees with 2-5 years service will receive a 1% increase. Those with 6-10 years service will receive a 2% increase and those with 10+ years will get a 3% increase.

It will also address the starting salary of new hires as well. The new minimum salary will be raised to $30,632 and anyone making less than that salary will be raised to that level within 15 months.

According to Blalock, “no pay plan prior to this one addressed all of the issues.” He added, “After the vote, my phone was ringing off the hook from other officers saying how happy they are that this was approved. I think this will help keep some people who were considering leaving and also help in the recruiting of new officers.”
