Strong Storm Causes Flooding, Other Problems

By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings

Several people around Rome can be considered lucky after being caught up in the many complications caused by today’s quick and strong thunderstorm.

The storm that moved in from the Northwest gained strength as it arrived in Floyd County, though never reached severe limits. The storm brought intense and frequent lightning and very heavy rains.

While the many downed trees that have become a normality in this week’s series of storms was absent, the storms flooded several streets around town. Within those floods, two cars were caught. One stalled in the water on John Davenport Dr. in front of Fire Station 5, but another left a female calling for help on W. 9th St. The water there was high enough that when the victim’s car stalled, it began to flood and she was forced to call 911 to be rescued. A bystandard saw the woman in need and was able to rescue her before Fire Units arrived. Needless to say, W. 9th St. was closed for 200 yards Saturday Night.

Lightning caused problems, striking a telephone pole on Shorter Ave. and striking trees near homes on Margo Trail in Twickingham Estates and Jack Ingram Rd. in Silver Creek.

Adverse Road Conditions were likely a factor also in a collision on GA Loop 1 at Old Calhoun Rd. The accident left four people injured and the intersection for the most part closed. The wreck that occurred around 5:30 PM was cleared by 6:00 PM. Radiator fluid was spilled during the wreck, causing a slippery mix on the road which led firefighters to spread sand.

All rain had moved to the South by 6:15 PM, though another area of rain was moving our way from the Chattanooga Area.
