Man Drowns At Rocky Mountain Recreation Area

By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings
An unidentified male was found dead after diving underwater and never resurfacing at the Rocky Mountain Recreational Area in Texas Valley early Monday Evening.
According to Rome Fire Deputy Chief Gordon Henderson, the 49 year old white male, now identified as Dwight Steven Pass of Calhoun, went under near the beach just before 4:30 PM. Family members then contacted DNR and Floyd 911 after they lost sight of him. The victim was last seen about 50 yards from the beach in 8-10 ft. deep water.
While DNR Rangers were first on the scene, the crew of Rome Fire Engine 8 were first to enter the water on floats, and located what they thought was the victim’s body around 30 minutes after the last sighting. This was confirmed when Rome Fire’s Rescue 51 Boat arrived on the scene and the body was pulled from the lake around 5:30 PM.
Family members who had remained at the beach and vigilant that the man was still alive, arrived at the West Antioch Boat Ramp just as the body was arrived at the dock and were horrified by the outcome.
The body has been turned over to the Floyd County Coroners Office which will send the body to the GBI Crime Lab for a autopsy.
Sources tell RomeNewswire that the man had bled from his head when he was removed from the water.
According to Dep. Chief Henderson, the cause of death is yet to be determined by the Coroner’s Office and that also, DNR and the Floyd County Police Dept. would follow-up with an investigation.
