Thursday Bad Day For Rome Emergency Vehicles

As Thursday’s weather left emergency vehicles scrambling to various calls , two of them weren’t so lucky.

As heavy rain accompanied by a few rumbles of thunder moved through Rome around 2:00 PM today, a rash of accidents plagued the area of West Rome. As Rome Police were responding to a wreck with injuries on Burnett Ferry Rd., one officer was involved in a single vehicle accident on Burnett Ferry at Abigail St. The wreck left the police cruiser undrivable and the officer uninjured.

As the rain cleared and the sun came out for a few hours, the afternoon heating spawned a strong line of storms near Chattanooga and Huntsville, which moved into Rome just before 7:00 PM. Around 6:45 PM, Rome Firefighters were called to a possible structure fire on Fred Kelly Rd. As Quint 3 responded down Turner McCall Blvd., they too were involved when a truck collided with them near Hicks Dr. While EMS was called, no one was injured and the fire truck was left drivable in this case.

The accident involving Quint 3 was the second this year involving one of the Rome Fire Quint Trucks. As readers may remember, Quint 5 was involved in an accident in early 2008 on Martha Berry Highway at Old Summerville Rd. That crash severely damaged the ladder, nearly knocking the bucket off the truck and left the truck out of service for some time for repairs.
