Daniel Bell Named Editor Of RomeNewswire’s “The Newswire” Print Edition
Beginning this week, The Newswire has a new editor at its helm. Daniel Bell, a former page editor for the Rome News-Tribune, has taken over day-to-day operations for the print publication.
“I am stepping down and will take over a much larger role with our Web sites, developing original video content,” former editor Jerry Duke said.
“We already do breaking news video, we are simply expanding our video operations and will be developing new original local programs and documentary-type programs.”
Bell brings with him several years of experience in print journalism, both as a reporter and page editor, as well as a vision for change.
“There are a lot of things I want to do,” Bell said. “But we’re going to start with the basics.”
He said that in today’s Internet-driven world, news stories are sometimes stale by the time they reach print.
“What happens, unfortunately, is news is published online, and then when the paper comes out, the same story you read yesterday is in the paper – word for word. It’s become the nature of Internet news,” Bell said. “The idea is to provide more in-depth coverage in print. We need to tell compelling stories. We need to give readers a reason to pick up the paper.”
The new editor said he plans to make some dramatic changes to not only the way the news in approached in print, but to the look for the newspaper.
“I’m excited about the possibility of giving readers in this area the chance to see something new and different. And I hope readers in turn will enjoy what they see,” he said.
Duke likes the direction Bell is planning to take the print issue.
“I am really excited about the ideas he has for the publication and believe that readers will begin to see a significant improvement in our paper from the start,” Duke said.
