Laughs Highlight Thursday’s Rotary Meeting

An unusual sound was heard during the Rome Rotary meeting Thursday afternoon at Coosa Country Club. There was meeting and greeting, and plenty of business talk, but there was also laughter. Lots of it. At times the speaker could barely be heard above the crowd’s laughter.
Durwood Fincher, also known as “Mr. Doubletalk,” was introduced under the guise of Dr. Robert Payne, a fancy government official from Washington, D.C., who was set to speak about health care.
But, minutes into his speech, it slowly became clear he wasn’t invited to enlighten, he was invited to entertain.
“I did a study a while back,” Fincher said. “Well, I didn’t, but I read it. And it was discovered that three out of four people make 75 percent.”
The one-liners and punch lines flowed throughout, with hardly a line wasted. Most of Fincher quips began with the sound of solid business advice. To quote: “Experience is what you get when you don’t get what were after to begin with.”
Also: “Mistakes are just stepping stones on the way to failure.” And: “Nothing difficult is ever easy.”
The real highlight of Mr. Doubletalk’s presentation, however, was the video he shot as club members were making their way into the lunch.
Fincher interviewed several Romans and pulled the doubletalk wool over their eyes. He also showed video of his most recent appearance on NBC’s “Today Show” and told stories about various other speaking engagements.
