Redlight Cameras Go Into Operation Monday, Citations Start September 8th
The new redlight camera system will be in operation starting Monday and anyone getting caught running the light will get a note in the mail from the city of Rome. However for the first 30 days, there will not be a citation attached to it, it will only contain a warning.
This red-light camera system will officially begin operation on Monday, August 11, 2008 at 12:01 AM. The state mandated 30-day warning period will continue until 12:00 AM, September 8, 2008.
During this 30-day warning period, anyone receiving a warning citation letter from the Martha Berry location will not be required to submit a fine. Once the warning period expires, all citations issued will include a $70.00 fine.
“The intersection of Martha Berry Highway and Veterans Memorial Highway is consistently one of the highest accident locations within the city limits of Rome,” stated Lonzo Roberson, Deputy Chief of the Rome Police Department. “The goal of the City of Rome and the Rome Police Department is to make our streets safer for the citizens of Rome and Floyd County and others who travel them. We feel the red-light camera system will assist in altering dangerous driving habits and reduce the number of accidents at this location. Please assist us in our effort to make the streets of the City of Rome safe.”
The red-light camera system located at the intersection of Hicks Drive and Turner McCall Boulevard will not be affected by the additional camera system; citations and a $70.00 fine will continue.
