DOT Archaeological Display To Be At Rome-Floyd County Library

The Georgia Department of Transportation will donate an educational archaeological display to the Rome-Floyd County Public Library. Officials from Georgia DOT and the Sara Hightower Regional Library System will get together at noon on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, for the installation of the display at the Rome-Floyd County Public Library, located at 205 Riverside Parkway in the city of Rome.

The display consists of three wall-mounted panels that contain general information on the prehistory of north Georgia and some teacher handouts for 3rd and 5th grade levels, providing teachers with the opportunity to use the donated display as an effective teaching tool. The educational contents of the display are geared towards 3rd and 5th grade students, but still appropriate for children of all age groups. The donation also includes a glass display case full of replicated prehistoric artifacts.

In preparation for its project to replace the bridge on State Route (SR) 100 over the Coosa River, Georgia DOT has recently conducted a large scale archaeological survey and excavation, and developed a public outreach initiative for the benefit of the local community. The educational archaeological display is a major part of that initiative. Both the public outreach initiative and resulting donation of the display are added proof that Georgia DOT is devoted to building and maintaining top-quality roads and bridges that meet the local community’s mobility needs, while preserving its history and protecting its environment.
