Rome Officials Trying to Deal With Housing Dilemma
Rome’s Community Development Committee learned of a major housing issue Wednesday.
Code enforcement officer Glen Rubin says his office has targeted a number of homes owned by the elderly for enforcement action, but that most of them cannot afford the repairs to bring their homes to code.
They end up in Environmental Court, can face fines that are difficult to pay and still can’t afford to make the needed repairs.
Community Development Director Ron Sitterding says there are indications more money for so-called minor housing improvements may be in the works, but are not available at this time.
