Small Business Development Center At Highlands To Close Due To Budget Cuts

The Small Business Development Center at Ga Highlands College will close September 30th.

Carole Abbott, an administrative assistant in the Rome office was transferred to a position on Highland main campus, however SBDC Director Peter Matthews will be out of a job at the end of the month.

Georgia Highlands could not afford it’s local match in the wake of budget cuts and Allen Adams with the state office said that the six counties served by the Rome office will have to be absorbed into caseloads at Kessesaw State Univ. and Dalton State College.

According to Adams with the State office that operates the small business development centers, the office will close as of September 31st. Adams said that Georgia Highlands notified the state that they would no longer be able to match the money needed for the local office to remain open.

The Rome office, which serves six counties, is the only SBDC district office in the state to be cut in the first wave of reductions by University system institutions.
