City Removes Tree From Home In East Rome

In what has become all too frequent lately, another large Oak tree has fallen onto a home in Floyd County.
Rome municipal arborist Terry Paige said he believes the trees are suffering from the effects of a 4 to 5 year drought. Paige said that trees that have been falling lately have been showing no sign of stress. He said the only thing he can think of that may be causing it is the sudden onslaught of water taken in by the already brittle trees after a heavy rain. “The trees are taking in hundreds of pounds of water into the limbs and branches and it increases the weight, causing some of the weaker ones to fall.”
Home owners Arnold and Peggy Browder who live at the East 14th Street home said the tree punchered the roof, sending a huge limb into one of the bedrooms. Arnold Bowder said “it sounded like an F-16 crashing into the house.” “I jumped up, not knowing what it was and ran into the bedroom… then I told my wife, call 911, a tree just hit the house” Browder said.
According to Browder, the tree severely damaged the home and hit the couple’s van as well. “We have already called the insurance company and they are supposed to get someone out here soon” he said.
Paige said we will probably see more of this even if we come out of this drought soon. “If the drought stopped now, we would probably have these issues for several more years due to the damage that has already been done to the trees.”
