Men strut down Broad Street in heels
More than 40 men sported high heels along with just as many women and marched on Broad Street Friday afternoon in an effort to raise awareness about domestic violence (pictured is Officer Keith Green of the Rome Police Department).
The event was hosted by the Hospitality House for Women, a shelter in Rome that has 27 beds for women and children.
“We are on of the top five as far as occupancy in the state of Georgia,” said Anne Havron, board chairwoman.
She said the walk is a relativally new international event held at 119 locations around the world, and honors the fact that October is Domestic Violence Month.
“We wanted some way to highlight domestic violence in Rome and Floyd County,” said Havron.
Jon Hershey, a professor at Georgia Highlands College, slipped his size 14 foot into a size 13 heel for the walk and helped rally several of his co-workers.
“When I learned domestic violence effected one out of three women, that’s an epidemic. You can look at any three women and one of them has been effected by domestic violence,” said Hershey. “I thought it was wearing heels for several blocks, though my toes might disagree.”
See Monday’s print issue of The Newswire for more details and photos of the event.
