Maplewood Square Home Lost in Fire

By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings
A home at the corner of Maplewood Square and Turners Chapel Rd. was left half-gutted after it caught fire Saturday afternoon.
Floyd Co. 911 initially received a third-party report of smoke coming from the roof of 42 Maplewood Square around 2:45 PM, heeding the response of Rome Fire Engines 4 and 1 along with Capt. Phil Taylor (Car 25) and Deputy Chief Benny Bohannon (Car 23). Engine 4 was first on the scene and discovered heavy flames and smoke coming from the garage area. The fire had already burned the roof off of that area of the home by their arrival.
As the large fire continued to spread into the living area, firefighters asked for the assistance of Engine 2 for an additional water supply. Also, the upset homeowners returned and revealed that everyone was out of the structure with the exception of a cat. Also, a van and a motorcycle which were parked in the garage burned.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by 3:10 PM, though as overhaul continued, a secondary fire began to
blaze from the gable of the home. Rome Fire Command Officers were able to spot the fire and and call a hose crew before it posed any danger.
According to Rome Fire Capt. Taylor, homeowners provided a possible cause of the fire which appeared to originate in the garage, though a representative from the fire marshal’s office would investigate. Capt. Taylor also advised that while the cat had not been located, firefighters were still looking for it.
The fire also led to the closing of Turners Chapel Rd. between the two entrances of Maplewood Sq. for around an hour.
