A series of house fires left some Rome firefighters sleepless around midnight Sunday as they worked to control the ttwo blazes.
According to Rome Fire Battalion Chief Steve Wilson, the series of alarms began around 11:50 when a loud popping noise was reported coming from the area behind a home on McGrady Rd. Witnesses and Firefighters including the crews of Engine 8, Quint 5, along with Cars 23 and 25 arrived to find the last home on the left of Hatfield Rd.was engulfed in flames. Chief Wilson said that all indications show that the house was vacant. That fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.
Then, at around 12:15 AM, Rome Fire Engines 1 and 4 along with Ladder 1, Rescue 1, and Car 25 were dispatched to a fully-involved structure fire at the corner of Elmwood and Kirkwood Streets in Celenese. Firefighter found the rear of the home at 20 Kirkwood St. blazing, but were quickly able to gain a knockdown. The home sustained heavy damage at its right-rear corner, the possible origin being an utility room.
Reports of an elderly male who was unaccounted for complicated the situation, and led to a primary and secondary search of the home. After a thorough investigation by Chief Wilson, he along with neighbors were unsure of the man’s whereabouts, though no car was parked at the home. According to Wilson, Firefighters would make an additional search before they left the scene.
Firefighters returned to the scene around 11:20 AM Monday when Insurane Agents inspecting the structure came across several hotspots. Rome Fire units responded and remained on the scene for a while dousing the spots.
Both fires were still under investigation by the Rome Fire Marshal’s Office Monday Morning.
