Chattooga Man Fires on Police Then Kills Self

A man took his own life outside Summerville Tuesday afternoon following a standoff with authorities.

Sheriff Ralph Kellett said the incident occurred on James Street.

A woman went the Sheriff’s department to make a complaint in a domestic dispute. A Bolo was put out for the man she was concerned about. Summerville Police said the man turned off Hwy 48 on James Street, left his vehicle and fired at two Summerville Police officers, who returned fire.

The man then turned the gun on himself.

Sheriff Kellett said that since Summerville Police Officers did fire on the man, that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation would investigate the incident.
