Rain, Slick Roads Lead to Morning Wrecks
By RNW Reporter Hayden Jennings
It seems the past few days, if it rains, it pours. Not only does that apply to Wednesday’s weather, but to the call volume of the Rome Fire Dept. because during the past few days, calls of the same nature have been reported in a short period of time. The cycle continued Wednesday with two wrecks.
The first wreck was dispatched around 9:30 AM to Engine 1 and Rescue 1 after two cars collided in front of River City Bank at N. 2nd Ave. and W. 3rd St. This collision led to no reported injuries, which allowed Rescue 1 to respond to the second and more severe wreck.
The second wreck was dispatched less than three minutes after the initial one. Quint 5 and Rescue 1 responded to Shorter Ave. at N. Hanks St, but the full extent wasn’t realized until Police arrived. The vehicle had left the roadway striking Diver’s Salvage and downing power lines across the Eastbound Lanes of Shorter Ave.
The driver was transported to Floyd Medical Center with minor injuries. While Police had trouble contacting the owner of the business, they called in a City Building Inspector to detirmine the building’s condition.
Eastbound Traffic on Shorter Ave. was hindered while crews worked to clear the roadway.
