New 911 System Being Installed, Dispatchers Using Back-up Center

By RomeNewswire • on October 21, 2008

After many months of waiting, 911 now has their new computer-aided dispatch system.

Crews are currently installing the system and connecting the phone lines.

During the change of systems, some 911 dispatchers are operating from the back-up 911 center located at the Floyd County jail. Calls are coming in to the back-up center and then relayed to the 911 center to be dispatched.

The old 911 system was riddled with bugs and had to be replaced. IPC, the company that installed the original equipment, had sent technicians to Rome on several occasions but were never able to completely fix the system.

According to 911 Director Pat Smith, the system changeover is going well and she says they hope to have it completely installed and operational by the end of day.

See next week’s issue of The Newswire for a complete story on the new 911 system.
